The SHSAT (Specialized High School Admissions Test) is a very intimidating moment in a student's life, as the results of the exam can be life-changing. It serves as the gateway into specialized high schools, some of the best schools in New York and some of the best in the country. These schools not only allow students to further their academic prowess, but they also give students a large boost in the college admissions process and access to opportunities that they wouldn't be able to get at other high schools.
The Metis SHSAT program aims to:
Practice test-taking skills to increase chances of being accepted into a specialized high school
Give guidance to students in the high school application process and to be a “big sib” to them
Before the first class, there is a diagnostic exam to determine the skill level of the student. Students are placed into two categories based on how they do on the exam.
For students that score 500 and beyond, they will be placed in "Coeus" and will expand upon their learning with practice and tests. Tutoring will consist of mainly timed questions/mock exams with feedback and proctoring.
For students that score below 500, they will be placed in "Minerva" and will focus on establishing the foundations needed in order to succeed on the SHSAT. Tutors will create lesson slides that focus on different aspects of the SHSAT to teach students, with primarily quizzes rather than full-length exams.
